The fastest gaining and falling categories in E-commerce

Many countries across the world, the UAE included, is temporarily on lock-down with directives to stay home 24/7. As a result it’s not surprising to see e-commerce become the strongest emerging sector at the moment. In March we took a deep dive into the shifts taking place on within the electronics and personal hygiene categories.

Our US partners, Stackline, are also tracking the movements online in America and compiled a list of the Top 100 Gaining and Top 100 Declining categories in March. A few of the big findings, are also reflective of what we are seeing here in the UAE.

  • In the US, businesses have also implemented a work-from-home policy, driving demand for electronics including monitors, keyboards and even office chairs. In the UAE there was a 35% increase in laptop sales and 30% increase in tablet sales. Download the electronic category review here.
  • In the US, there is a surge in home fitness equipment and accessories. The impact of people working out at home, has impacted sales on the gym bag category and outdoor sport categories.
  • Categories with significant declines are related to banned/deferred categories, including travel categories (luggage & suitcases, camera and swimwear) and formal apparel (Bridal and Men’s Suits)
